WHAT IS RAMADAN?
Ramadan is an important religious observance for Muslims around the world. It is the ninth month of the Muslim lunar calendar, and Muslims fast during this time to celebrate and honor their faith. During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset for thirty days.
Each day during Ramadan, fasting observers wake up early in order to have a pre-dawn meal known as “suhoor” before they begin their daily fast. Throughout the day they must not eat or drink anything until after sunset when they are allowed to break their fast with “iftar” meals which typically include dates, fruits, soups and other traditional dishes.
The purpose of Ramadan is to practice self-discipline by connecting with God through prayer and abstinence from worldly desires such as smoking and sexual activities during daylight hours to focus on prayer, reflection and spirituality. Muslims also use this time period for charitable activities such as providing meals for those in need or offering financial support to those who are financially unstable.
ISLAMIC CALENDAR - HIJRI
Eid is a very special time in the Muslim calendar. It is a celebration of the end of Ramadan, which is the Islamic month of fasting. Currently, the Hijri calendar 1444 is running and thus, Eid Al Fitr falls at the end of April 2023 this year. Muslims start observing Ramadan fasting with the appearance of crescent in the evening sky. Usually, the appearance in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is considered as more valid and the start date of Ramadan varies from place to place.
WHAT IS RAMADAN FASTING
Overall, the concept of Ramadan fasting depends upon the value of atonement as Muslims all over the world practice abstinence or self-restraint. It is called Sawm i.e. one of the pillars of Islam religion. Other pillars of Islam are Shahada. Salah, Zakat and Hajj.
Shahadah refers to one god and no other god. Also it means that there is only one messenger of God i.e. Prophet Muhammad. Salat means the mindful prayer that is offered to god. Every muslim has to donate some portion of their entire wealth to a charity. This is called Zakat and it can vary around 2.5% to 1/4th of overall savings and wealth.
Ramadan fasting or sawm stands as a very significant part of every Muslim. They break their fast with dates, apricots or sweetened milk. This fasting routine was followed by Prophet Muhammad and thus, Muslims all over the world follow the same. Ramadan fasting is exempted for younger infant children, those who are physically ill and pregnant women. It is also said that those are required to travel far for work or emergency purposes. Muslims can make up their lost fasting hours by additional fasting beyond the month of Ramadan. If at all, some cannot complete his additional fasting then a grand donation is requested to be done on behalf of that individual.
